Energy Management Systems – Help Is At Hand!

Another guest blog from a company also committed to help businesses improve their environmental impact. In business though it is important to improve continuously, but also to record your progress and improvements. Use it for competitive advantage, when the crowd see the benefits of going green they will soon follow.  Does your business have an Environmental Management System (EMS)?  Thanks to Dave Blinston......

Well it has finally happened, the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is in force and the question now is what do we actually need to do to comply and ensure that we are not penalised for poor performance?

In addition, there are many organisations who do not at this time need to participate in the CRC scheme but who are maybe tendering for public sector work and / or wish to be registered as vendors with procurement agencies such as Altius and Achilles. If your company fits into this bracket, then you will be noticing that to win business, you are having to demonstrate your environmental commitments more and more.

To most people, this is not easy and we are inundated with guidance, so called best practice and ways to reduce our environmental impacts and energy usage. Even if you are committed to reducing your organisation’s impacts, are you documenting this in a way that allows you to evidence the fact?

The ISO 14001 standard has for some time provided a benchmark for organisations to demonstrate that they operate an effective Environmental Management System however these systems can be very vague when it comes to energy reduction.

So, welcome the new kid on the block; BS EN16001: 2009 Requirements for Energy Management Systems.

This standard has been written tospecifically help organisations of all types and sizes to establish the systems and processes necessary to improve energyefficiency. It can be used independently or integrated into an existingmanagement system such as one complying with ISO 14001, ISO 9001 etc.

As with the other management system standards, BS EN 16001 requires the implementation of a continuous improvement process. This will lead to more efficient energy use and encourages organisations to implement an energy monitoring plan as well as energy analysis.

So, what does adoption of this new standard actually mean?

It means that your organisation will be demonstrating commitment to reducing energy usage whilst at the same time saving money and it doesn’t get better than that!
